Resolved Question: Getting to the blades on riding mower - Help?
I am new to owning a riding mower and not the "most" mechanically inclined person so please bear with me on this question - I have an MTD riding mower (front engine, 14.5hp) - on the deck it says "triple cut" but all I can really see is 2 circular areas for blades under the deck (not positive if it has 2 or 3 blades) I bought the tractor used so no owners guide or anything. It is about a 2001 model I believe, in very good shape. My question - how do I get to the blades to remove for sharpening? The tractor of course is very heavy and I don't think I could tilt it on its rear end - the deck having atleast the 2 blades under it is pretty wide and sticks out far on each side, so I don't see how I could tilt it sideways either as it would be pivoting all the tractor weight on the deck metal. Is the some trick to getting access under these types of lawn tractors? Maybe putting it up on ramps or something? Also is that the way to sharpen the blades - to remove them first ?
Resolved Question: My riding mower runs too fast and the throttle won't slow it down, why is this happening?
I cannot control the idle speed of my Wheelhorse lawn tractor. The throttle cable is intact and the idle arm, etc. moves the way it should. Adjusting the air, fuel, and idle screws works for a short time but then the engine starts racing again. The engine is a Kohler, Magnum 16, 16HP, model# M16S, spec.# 711523, serial# 1801506744 Is it a carburator problem..?? Any info would be appreciated.

If you are just starting to mow yards, I have plenty of good tips that you may want to know.My first tip is to always pick up any debris you see laying in your yard.If you don't you could run over it and it could possibly break your lawn mower or it could go into a neighbors yard.Before you do or get anything out it would be very wise to make sure you have enough gas.Something else you might want to do is wear comfortable clothes while you mow.Never wear your nice looking clothes while mowing because grass stains might get on them. When I mow, I make sure that I wear some working gloves because once when I was mowing without them i got blisters on my hand from holding the lawn mower to tight.Usually I choose to mow on a day that it is not so hot.I always wear sunscreen, so that my skin does not get damaged by the sun.Another great tip is to invest in buying a riding lawn mower especially if you have a large yard.One more wise tip is to never, ever run over rocks with the lawn mower because, if you do it could fly in the air and hit someone in the eye or it could also bust someones window.Also watch out for children playing and never forget to put your gas can or lawn mower equipment back in the building.These are the things i do while i mow the lawn and, I hope they help you too.

Hello I have an old 14.5HP Kolher powered Craftsman riding mower. I have recently replaced the battery, air filter, and rebuilt the carb. It has been running great since those things were performed and then today I ran out of gas while mowing the lawn. I put more in and tried to start it back up and I got nothing, no click, no attempt to turn over. I checked and even bypassed the seat button, made sure the clutch was fully depressed, the mower was not engaged, etc to no avail. It appears to be grounded fine as well and the only fuse I found was a 30 amp and that was replaced when I did the above mentioned maint. and is still fine. Could this be a solenoid issue or is there somewhere else I can check before making that trip? Thanks in advance.

I recently became obsessed with lawn mower racing, i have an old 14hp Murray riding mower and i want to make it into a little project by making it faster, i'm going to take the blade deck off and all that etc. to make it a bit of a racing mower, not really fast because i dont want to spend much at all, i saw some videos on youtube that people just took the blade deck off and added smaller sprockets etc. but other than that u can keep it stock and taking off some parts to make it go faster, does anyone have any advice on whats a good idea to do so or have any instructional videos on how to do that? thank you so much :P

I have a craftsman riding mower with a 12 hp Briggs and Stratton engine, and it was running fine once i jumped it with a battery charger, then when i tried to turn it on again nothing happened just a clicking noise..i replaced the battery and the same clicking noise happened, then i tried to jump the battery with the car but the same thing happened. I've heard that it could be the starter or the battery but i don't know how to check the starter, What are other possibilities/ how do i check if the starter or the solenoid isn't working?

My riding mower has 3 blades. They are about $25 each. It's going to be time for new blades soon. Is it possible to make my own blades from some flat stock iron? I have some 1/8" x 1.5" flat stock, which is about the same dimensions as the original blades. Do I just need to heat temper the iron to make it harder? I thought about placing the end of the fabricated blade in a fire (charcoal grill, propane torch, or MAPP gas torch) until it's red hot then quenching it in some motor oil that is 300-400 degrees. Would this work?

I'm trying to drain the gas from the Poulan Pro riding lawn mower. I found the hose and there are three different clamps. There is also a red circly thingy...I don't know what it really is but my best guess might be the filter. One clamp is in front of the red circle, another is directly behind it, and the last clamp is at the end of the hose where it connects to the engine. Every clamp I can get undone but I can't figure out how to disconnect the hose no matter how much I pull and wiggle it. Am I doing something wrong?

My riding lawn mower is cutting to short. I have it on the highest setting and it is still cuttin real short. Is there a way to fix that? Also it cuts uneven but the deck is level

The lawn mower simply won't turn on without hooking up jumper cables to the battery and the starter + oil drain. Also, the gears are sometimes very difficult to switch. In addition, when I turn it off, it makes a popping noise much like what you would hear from an exhaust pipe on a car. Help? I believe that the battery is new. I tested its functionality by plugging both negative ends of the jumper cables to the positive and negative ends on the battery. This caused sparks. Does this mean that the battery is good or should I consider replacing it anyways?

Hey i have a relatively new riding lawn mower until that day! when i had a phone call inside! so i turned off the lawn mower went to the phone came back to fire it up and poof.. smoke coming from the muffler located in the front. Also it was spiting oil all over the place! also coming from the muffler. The lawn mower does start for about three seconds then shuts off. Keep in mind this lawn mower is only two years old SO what the hell is going on and what can i do to fix it? thanks for anyones help its greatly appreciated.

I HAVE PICKED UP A CRAFTSMAN 3YR OLD RIDING LAWN MOWER THAT WAS IN A FLOOD. IT HAS BEEN SITTING IN A BACKYARD FOR ABOUT A YEAR AFTER THE FLOOD. I CHARGED THE BATTERY AND THE LIGHTS COME ON BUT WHEN I TRY TO START IT IT JUST HAS ONE LOUD CLICK..CAN I FIX THIS?? PLEASE HELP AS IT IS STILL A NICE LAWN MOWER.. thanks verry much for your responses..ill try these things when i get a chance :) no i got it for free.. i halfway charged the battery and it is cranking. i am going to try replacing the spark plugs and oil. cleaning out the carb and gas and fully charging the battery. GREAT!!! i got it working...thanks for the help..only thing is..when i turn the blades on and start cutting the engine bogs down really bad.. any input on this?? Ive replaced the spark plugs,gas,oil, and cleaned the gas lines..

Resolved Question: HELP with riding mower?
Hit the mower deck, not the blade, with a root and since the mower does not start. We have replaced the selenoid, battery, ignition key switch and spark plug. Last time we got it to start took battery cables to battery on lawn mower and connected the red line to the starter and it started. Now, when I do it, the screen on top of the engine is spinning but the lawn mower is not firing or starting. Is there something else I need to check?
